The Summer Set puts on a ‘Legendary’ concert

Please excuse my terrible pun title, but it had to be done.

–The Summer Set. March 01, 2014. The Studio at Webster Hall.

Seeing The Summer Set in such an intimate setting (The Studio at Webster Hall) was certainly a great experience. With no opening act, The Summer Set took to the small stage with no fancy introduction. They walked out, said hello, introduced themselves, and let us know they were stoked to play yet another night in NYC.

As Legendary is one of my favorite albums of 2013, hearing it stripped down, front to back, live, was a beautiful thing for me. Starting off the night with Maybe Tonight, they set a tone that the rest of the night would not be a disappointment. As the night went on, lead singer Brian Dales let the crowd know we were not yet topping the crowd from the night before. That was until they played Boomerang where Dales said “That’s the NYC I’m talking about!” And he let us know we weren’t a disappointment.

Both brothers, Stephen and John Gomez didn’t miss a note all night. And Jess Bowen was certainly not a let down on the drums. The band left the stage for Dales to take to the keyboard for a rather different rendition of “f*** you over” and let us know it was no coincidence that this song was right after “Heart On the Floor” on their album. The band then came back to finish off the rest of the album, ending their set with the ever so fitting song, legendary. The band walked off stage and the lights turned off but we knew that wasn’t the end.

Dales came back out with Josh Montgomery and his brother, Connor. They started their encore with “When We Were Young,” Played their bonus track from legendary “One Night,” continued with a cover of “Carry On” by Fun.  And took a request to play “The Boys You Do” from their “Love Like This” album referring to it as “the most punk rock acoustic jam session.”

The Summer Set ended the night by getting off the stage and into the crowd for their final song. We know it wouldn’t be a concert of The Summer Set‘s without them playing their ever famous “Chelsea” and that’s just what they did. With no mic, Dales stood above the crowd and led one big sing along.

The night was most definitely worth it, and it’s easy to see why TSS sold out 13 of their 14 shows on this tour. If you’re looking for a good show, TSS won’t disappoint. Catch them this summer on the Vans Warped Tour in a city near you!
